The state Department of Transportation has closed the Route 71 Shark River Bridge between Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea to traffic this week to allow maintenance to be done on the moveable bridge.
The closure began at 7 a.m. today aand will continue through 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.
The bridge is closed for electrical work to replace and upgrade control equipment and gearboxes on the moveable span.
The span will be kept in a raised position while the work is being done to allow marine traffic to pass.
