FREEHOLD — A disbarred former Red Bank lawyer was sentenced to a 10-year prison sentence for stealing property from former clients.
Alexander M. Iler, 39, an Atlantic Highlands resident who had maintained a law office on Maple Avenue in Red Bank, was sentenced on Monday in Superior Court. In August Iler pleaded guilty to one count second degree theft of immovable property, one count of second degree theft by deception and four counts each of second and third degree charges of theft by failure to make required disposition of property received, according to Charles Webster, public information officer for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
When Iler was last in court this summer, he admitted he forged the signature of the seller on a deed transfer, listing him as the buyer for property in Middletown, owned by the estate of a former client. The transfer stated Iler paid $575,000 for the land, when in reality no money changed hands. Iler then used the transfer to secure a mortgage on the property, according to Webster. Iler also admitted he stole more than $500,000 from former clients.
In August Iler also consented to a civil judgment against him for $500,000, according to Webster.
IIer had been disbarred in June 2012.
