ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society will be hosting Karen Schnitzpahn at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 for its monthly meeting at the Strauss Mansion.
The meeting is free and open to the public at the Strauss Mansion,
Schnitzpahn, who is the author of several books on Little Silver, will be discussing her most recent book whose topic is of interest to most – “ Food.”
Her lecture, “Jersey Shore Food History: Victorian Feasts to Boardwalk Treats.” will take attendees on a mouth-watering tour of the Jersey Shore from boardwalk favorites like saltwater taffy and iconic fast foods and custard stands and hot dog carts to the local fish and farm-raised produce of elegant eateries and learn how it all began.
The foods we enjoy today are part of a long tradition, beginning in the Victorian era, when big oceanfront hotels served elaborate meals. Diverse dishes and restaurants emerged during prohibition and the Great Depression when fast food appeared and iconic boardwalk treats developed.
Signed copies of her book will be available for purchase.Refreshments will be served.
