HIGHLANDS – New Jersey State Police are investigating whether a body found near the Capt. Joseph Azzolina Bridge is that of a missing Highlands clammer.
State Police received a call at 2:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, about a body floating in the Shrewsbury River, near the Route 36 bridge that connects Highlands to Sea Bright.
An autopsy was expected to be performed by Monmouth County Medical Examiner’s Office personnel. They will be trying to determine if the body is that of Highlands boat-owner Edward Broderick, who has been missing since mid-December.
Broderick’s 20-foot clamming boat was found, mostly submerged, about 20 yards from Marine Place on Sunday, Dec. 15, in the Shrewsbury River off of Highlands.
State Police from the Newark Bay unit responded to the call on Monday, found the body and brought it to shore, according to State Police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams.
Also responding to the scene were the State Police Major Crimes and Missing Persons units, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Highlands police.
The body was transported to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold where an autopsy will be performed, Williams said.
