FREEHOLD – A Howell Township man surrendered to Howell police and was arrested Monday in connection with a fatal hit and run that killed a Spring Lake bicyclist on March 12.
Abraham Chapnick, 83, was charged with one count of second degree knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and several motor vehicle summons in connection to the death of Charles McHugh, 58, according to Charles Webster, spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities said McHugh was riding his bike along Herbertsville Road, Howell, when he was struck from behind at approximately 2 p.m. McHugh died as a result of his injuries.
Following his surrender to police, bail for Chapnick was set at $150,000 without the option to post a 10 percent bond.
A conviction on the knowingly leaving the scene offense carries with it a maximum penalty of a 10-year prison sentence, according to Webster.
