FREEHOLD — The two-day gun buy-back program, conducted last week, collected 359 weapons, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
The buy back, conducted in Rumson and Asbury Park last Friday and Saturday, took in five assault weapons, 59 semi-automatic handguns, 157 revolvers, 52 shotguns and 56 rifles. The assault weapons turned in were: a MAC-10 with a sound suppressor and high capacity magazines; an SKS Soviet military-style semi-automatic weapon with fixed bayonet; a Marlin 99 .22 caliber rifle; an Arsenal SLR-95 AK-47 reproduction model; and an M-1 military combat carbine.
The program paid $25,100 for the firearms. Authorities also received 21 BB-guns and nine inoperable weapons, even though there was no cash reward for those, according to the prosecutor’s office.
A total of 112 firearms were collectedFriday, May 16, in Asbury Park at the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Satellite Office and 97 at the Rumson Police Department. On Saturday, May 17, a total of 76 were turned in in Asbury Park and 74 in Rumson.
The weapons collected will be destroyed.
The program allows the public to surrender weapons anonymously and with no questions asked about how they obtained them.
