RED BANK – A Red Bank man, who had been working as a substitute teacher and coach at Red Bank Regional High School, is facing charges of sexual assault for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old female high school student at his home.
Darnell Lewis, 37, of Leighton Avenue, is being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold on $200,000 bail without the option to post a 10 percent bond. Lewis was charged with three counts of second-degree sexual assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, according to Charles Webster, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities alleged Lewis had sexual intercourse with the victim on at least three separate occasions at his Leighton Avenue home between Dec. 31 and April while he was working at Red Bank Regional, 101 Ridge Road, Little Silver.
The victim was a student at the school, Webster said.
Lewis formerly was employed as a part-time hall monitor, substitute teacher and assistant football and basketball coach. He recently tendered his resignation and has not returned to the school, Webster said.
Lewis is prohibited from having any contact with the victim as a condition of his bail, according to Webster.
Each of the second-degree charges carry a maximum 10-year state prison sentence upon conviction, according to Webster.
