SANDY HOOK – A New Jersey State police investigation has identified the body found floating off of Sandy Hook a week ago.
The body was identified as that of John Cocchi, 75, a resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., according to trooper Jeff Flynn.
Cocchi had been the subject of a search by New York City police when family members reported him missing in April, Flynn said.
The circumstances of Cocchi’s death are still being investigated but “the preliminary investigation has not revealed anything suspicious at this time,” Flynn said.
A recreational fisherman discovered Cocchi’s body on June 16, floating several miles off of Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook in the Ambrose Channel, a deepwater channel usually used by commercial vessels.
