SEA BRIGHT– Long serving Borough Councilman C. Read Murphy has resigned from the council.
Murphy, 64, a Republican, took to the Facebook page All About Sea Bright on Thursday, July 3, without offering any explanation and announced: “I would like to inform the residents that as of today I will no longer represent you on the Sea Bright council. I have had a long and great run and I feel the need to leave with my head held high. I wish to thank all of you that had supported me over the past 28+ years. For those that have not…Oh well.”
Murphy also has served as director of the borough’s Office of Emergency Management.
Last month, he was on the ballot for the GOP nomination to run for re-election in November for one of the two borough council seats up this year. But in a three-way primary race, Murphy found himself in a tie with fellow incumbent James A. LoBiondo. Political newcomer John A. Lamia Jr. was the top vote-getter.
The responsibility for naming the second candidate for the local party line on the November ballot falls to the Monmouth County party chair, recently elected Shaun Golden, the county sheriff, who will have had until Sept. 11 to fill the slot.
