RED BANK — In honor of borough favorite son, jazz legend Count Basie, there will be a series of jazz concerts on the borough’s west side in August and September.
The second annual concert series will be held from 6:45 to p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13, at the municipal pocket park at the intersection of Shrewsbury Avenue and Drs. James Parker Boulevard.. This Friday’s concert features Bradford Haye. The Sept. 6 concert will feature the Darwin B. Oden Quartet on Sept. 6; and Sept. 13, the Next Generation of Soul.
Concertgoers are asked to “bring lawn chairs and bring your friends.”
The concert series was the idea of the borough’s Vision Committee, chaired by Councilwoman Juanita Lewis, and is intended to pay homage to William James “Count” Basie (1904-1984) and his contribution to American music. Born in the borough, he was referred to as the “Kid from Red Bank.”
The concert series is being made possible through private donations.
