RED BANK – Police are asking for any witnesses to contact them concerning a collision between pedestrians and a motor vehicle Thursday evening that has left an 85-year-old borough woman in critical condition.
Ruth Berry, 85, was crossing Newman Springs Road with her 4-year-old great-grandson at approximately 7:50 p.m. Thursday when they were struck by a minivan traveling west, according to Police Chief Darren McConnell.
Berry and the child were crossing mid-block, south to north just west of the Burger King when they were struck in right hand westbound lane, McConnell said.
The minivan was driven by Louis Veste, 66, of Staten Island, McConnell said.
Berry was taken by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, to be treated for head and other injuries. As of Friday she is listed in critical condition, authorities said.
The child, whose identity was not released, was also taken to Jersey Shore for a non-life threatening head injury. He was treated and released Thursday night, McConnell said.
There were no indications that Veste was speeding or alcohol was involved on anyone’s part and at this point no violations have been issued, McConnell said.
“It was pretty close to dark at that point” in the evening, McConnell said. “It seems like it was an accident.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Red Bank Police’s Department of Traffic Safety at 732-530-2719.
