TRENTON — The state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Governor’s Office of Recovery and Rebuilding announced they will be collaborating with six colleges and universities in the state, including Monmouth University, West Long Branch, to study and evaluate flood mitigation strategies.
In addition to Monmouth, Rutgers and Montclair State universities, Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Stockton College will participating, with the studies focusing on areas of the state heavily impacted by Super Storm Sandy and that continue to be vulnerable to future flooding and damage.
The studies’ results are expected to be developed over the next six months and will be forwarded to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the corps’ $20 million study of the coastal North Atlantic Region. The DEP’s Flood Control Section and Office of Engineering and Construction will administer the studies, with funding from grants from the DEP’s annual flood control appropriations.
