FREEHOLD – Monmouth County residents today and Saturday will have the opportunity to anonymously surrender firearms and receive a financial benefit.
The county’s gun buy-back program will be taking place at Rumson Police headquarters, 80 River Road, and the Shiloh Community Fellowship Church, 142 DeWitt Ave., Asbury Park, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and tomorrow. Anyone can surrender firearms without having to answer questions about his or her identity or how the firearms came into possession.
Participants will receive $200 for assault weapons, $100 for handguns and $25 for rifles or shotguns. Ammunition, BB and pellet guns can be turned in, but there is no payment for those items.
All weapons should be unloaded and transported in accordance with the law.
The buy-back program is sponsored by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Board of Chosen Freeholders, Sheriff’s Office and Police Chiefs’ Association.
During a two-day event in Asbury Park and Keansburg in March, 1,581 guns were collected through the program.
