FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department announced it is on a heightened alert throughout the county with the coming of the Jewish High Holy Days and as the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York City
As world leaders convene in Manhattan at the United Nations, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said in a released statement that his officers will be working with local police, supplementing patrols at a number of locations, including ferry terminals and other area major transportation hubs. The department’s K-9 units will be patrolling ferry terminals and commuter train stations.
Increased patrols will also be on hand at synagogues, schools and houses of worship during the religious holidays as requested, Golden said. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown Wednesday.
“The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office will take steps to ensure that the Jewish holiday celebration peaceful for all,” Golden said.
The sheriff’s department is also reminding the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
Members of the department routinely conduct security checks at critical infrastructure throughout the county, according to the sheriff’s office.
