FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office said  it has been and will remain on a heightened alert in preparation for Thursday’s anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Sheriff Shaun Golden said in a released statement his department will continue to work with local law enforcement throughout the county and “take whatever steps are required to ensure the safety and security of the people who live and work in Monmouth County as well as those who may be visiting.”
The sheriff’s department routinely conducts security checks at critical infrastructures throughout the county. While there is no indication of an immediate threat as the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, “law enforcement will have a greater presence and heightened vigilance,” the statement said.
That includes the department supplementing local police patrols at various locations, including commuter ferry terminals and other transportation hubs.
The sheriff department’s K-9 units will be sweeping ferry terminals and train stations, as well as major 9/11 remembrance observances throughout the week.
The department also asks that the public remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
