WEST LONG BRANCH – The Jersey Shore Jewish Music Festival is presenting its first concert, “One People, Many Voices: Celebrating a World of Jewish Music,” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7, at Monmouth University.
The eclectic concert unites Monmouth County’s diverse groups of Jewish heritage into an extravaganza of world music. Three genres of Jewish world music will be celebrated – Klezmer music from Eastern Europe, Ladino music from Spain and Turkey and Syrian music from the Middle East.
The concert, sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Monmouth County, will be held at the Pollak Theater at Monmouth University, 400 Cedar Ave.
Syrian singer and community builder, Moe Tawil, now in his 10th decade, will be honored for his lifetime commitment and contributions to Jewish music.
Israeli and Middle Eastern singer Yohai Cohen, backed by an Arabic music ensemble, is the evening’s featured soloist. Also featured on the program is the Jersey Shore’s own Shir Mishugas Jewish Music Ensemble. Cantor, composer and conductor Jeffrey DiLucca leads Shir Mishugas in Ladino songs stemming from Judeo-Spanish culture and Klezmer music originating in the Ashkenazi Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.
