After being in production for almost 3 years, Misfire the independent feature film by Jersey-born writer/director Eric Hackler is finally being aimed at the big screen.
The film is a local production through and through. Almost the entire cast and crew are from Monmouth County and it was shot on location in Red Bank, Freehold, Eatontown, Long Branch and Ocean Township, so it’s only fitting that it premieres here as well.
The screening will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the Freehold Independent Fire Company at 30 Siloam Road. Tickets are $7. The film runs 2 1/2 hours and will be followed by a Q&A with the six leads and the writer/director.
The third feature from Checker Liar Pictures, Misfire tells the story of six desperate people who have come together to play a game of Russian roulette. As the game continues, the backstories of each character are revealed so that when the final shot rings out, everyone knows what brought these six lost souls to the table.

The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County, in conjunction with its current exhibit, Fun Can Be Work! The Art of ClaraGee Stamaty, Stanley Stamaty, and Mark Alan Stamaty, will offer a PowerPoint lecture at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, called “My Life and My Art” by ClaraGee Stamaty.
Stamaty, a renowned cartoonist and fine artist, will talk about her life and her art and how her career evolved. She will also talk about her late husband Stanley, their work together, about Mark’s development as an artist, and some of the techniques and media they have used in their work.
A question and answer period will follow the lecture, which is free to the public.

The Monmouth County Cool Cities Partnership (MCCCP), a grassroots organization dedicated to educating community members about environmental issues, has planned a September symposium on Sea Level Rise in New Jersey: Causes, Effects and a Call to Action.
The event was spurred on by The New York Times article entitled “ Sea Level Rise Is Seen as Threat to 3.7 Million.”
The symposium is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Brookdale Community College’s Warner Student Life Center. Co-sponsors for the event are Monmouth County Environmental Council, Brookdale Community College, American Littoral Society, Clean Ocean Action and New Jersey Environmental Federation.
Professor Norbert Psuty, Rutgers University, will talk about impacts of sea-level rise on coastal Monmouth County. A panel, moderated by Jan Dash, Ph.D, will respond to Psuty’s presentation. Randall Solomon, co-director of Sustainable Jersey, will introduce Sustainable Jersey’s new climate adaptation point-scoring actions for communities.
New Jersey is listed among those states most vulnerable to the impact of sea-level rise. Two conditions contribute to Monmouth County’s vulnerability: the rising sea level and the sinking coastline due to the movement of the tectonic plates in that location.
The Sept. 29 symposium will offer strategies communities can implement to mitigate the impact of rising seas, big storm surges and flooding.

LONG BRANCH
Journalist Janine Strafaci has been named the honorary chairperson of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward a Cure to be held Saturday, Sept. 8, at Pier Village. Strafaci’s son has a shellfish allergy.
The walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Great Lawn, north of Pier Village, with check-in at 9 a.m. Following the walk, New Jersey rocker Ray Andersen will be headlining a concert. Anderson, who has played with Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Matchbox 20 and Meat Loaf, is known to thousands of kids as the children’s singer/songwriter Mr. Ray.
The Academy of Music and Drama’s student band, the Purple Keys, also will be performing a set of music. The Fair Haven school is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year.
Post-walk activities also include appearances by Star Wars-costumed characters and the Lakewood BlueClaws mascot, Buster. Kids will also enjoy a bounce house, face painting, tattoos, hair accessories, arts and crafts, and other exciting games and activities. NJ 101.5 will be present at the event.

Community members will soon get the opportunity to refresh their driving skills from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wed. Aug. 22, when Regal Pointe Independent Living hosts a one-day American Association of Retired Persons’ (AARP) Safe Driver Refresher Course.
Successful completion can result in discounts on car insurance and the elimination of one point on your license (contact your insurance agent for details). The course is available to drivers age 50 and older who have not yet completed the initial course or who have let three years pass since taking it.
The cost of the course for AARP members, with proof of membership, is $12 per person. The cost for nonmembers is $14 per person. All participants must bring their AARP membership card, if applicable, and a valid driver’s license. The event includes lunch, courtesy of Regal Pointe.

RED BANK
Red Bank Policeman’s Benevolent Association Local 39 will be hosting its annual golf outing and fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 28, at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Colts Neck, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
The fundraiser helps fund the general operating account for the welfare of members as well as other local programs.
This year a portion of the proceeds will go to Gregory King. Gregory lives in Middletown and was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) at the age of 2. He is now 8 years old and his condition continues to worsen. The funds will assist in purchasing a ramp, a wheelchair and a new vehicle that will accommodate his needs.
Cost is $140 for golfers and includes greens fees for 18 holes of golf with a cart, continental breakfast, access to the beverage cart, a buffet lunch, a gift bag, personalized bag tags and awards and prizes.
