Family Promise will host its Third Annual Cardboard Box City (CBC) on Friday, Sept. 28, as a way to promote awareness of the plight of homeless families while the organization raises funds for its programs.
To connect with the experience of homelessness, CBC “residents” will sleep in their own cardboard boxes on the grounds of the Monmouth Church of Christ, Tinton Falls, and wait in line for a meal of soup and bread. There will be speakers, activities and entertainment for participants. Prizes will be given to the participants who raise the most money and to the most creative dwelling.
Cardboard Box City is open to youth groups from local congregations, schools and Scout troops (youth to adult ratios 5:1), as well as families with children (children must be supervised by an adult).
Participants supply their own dwellings – large refrigerator or washer/dryer boxes which can be picked up at appliance stores – and decorate them to represent home sweet home.
Participants raise $100 or more to secure a spot for their box. Family Promise is seeking sponsors for this unique and inspirational event. “The need for food, shelter and comprehensive counseling for families temporarily without homes continues to grow in Monmouth County. We count on the funds raised by Carboard Box City No. 3 to help these parents and children to regain their homes and their dignity,” said Tracy Boyer, the organization’s executive director.
Family Promise is the only shelter for homeless families in Monmouth County. With the ongoing high unemployment rate, homelessness continues to be a very real situation for too many families. The organization has a success rate of 75 percent for helping families move out of shelters and into housing.
