ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS
Michael Scherfen, a local watercolor artist, will be showing and discussing his paintings, ranging from portraits to local and European landscapes, at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at the Atlantic Highlands Public Library.
Scherfen will demonstrate the techniques he uses to build a painting, from the initial sketch to the finished painting.
Scherfen was born in Portland, Oregon and grew up in San Francisco. He now lives in the borough. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, Calif. He is a 27-year veteran New York City advertising art director. He retired and started painting in 2008, studying under the renowned watercolor artist Donald Voorhees. His paintings range from portraits to landscapes and seascapes.
Monday Mix meets the first Monday of the month at 10 a.m. at the library, 100 First Ave. and at various locations throughout the year.

FAIR HAVEN
The Garden Club of Fair Haven will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Bingham Hall, Rumson.
Our guest this month will be Bruce Crawford, director of Rutgers Gardens. His articles have been featured in Fine Gardening Magazine and he loves plants and gardens. His talk this month will be on “Pruning – Not a Mysterious Act.”
There will be a nominal fee of $4 for guests, which will cover a Thanksgiving luncheon.
FREEHOLD
The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County is holding a two-part program with lecture and concert, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, by Dr. David Brahinsky, instructor of philosophy and comparative religion at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania.
In Part 1, he will speak on the complex and often difficult history of the three Abrahamic faiths’ co-existence, and his vision for their future in “Holy War & Peace in Islam, Judaism & Christianity.” In Part 2, which begins at 2:30 p.m., he and the Roosevelt String Band will present “Israeli and Middle Eastern Songs and Stories” concert.
Admission is $12 members, $15 nonmembers for both events. The Jewish Heritage Museum is located at 310 Mounts Corner Drive. The museum is handicapped accessible.

RED BANK
The Red Bank Public Library is starting a young adult book group that will take place on the first Monday of each month from 4 to 5 p.m.

RUMSON
Former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand will visit Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, to discuss his new book, Believe: My Faith and the Tackle That Changed My Life.
Written with Mike Yorkey, Believe is an inspirational memoir based on a journey that began on Oct. 16, 2010. LeGrand, then a defensive tackle for the Rutgers University football team, playing under Coach Greg Schiano, was injured in a game against Army at MetLife Stadium. LeGrand was left paralyzed from the neck down but began an amazing tale of rehabilitation and hope as chronicled in the pages of Believe, which is Eric’s first book.
LeGrand’s story has been featured on the networks ESPN, CBS, and NBC and he has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. During the past year he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Schiano is now the head coach and was presented with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs. In New Jersey, LeGrand was given the Unsung Hero Award by the New Jersey Hall of Fame and named The Most Influential Person in New Jersey by the Star-Ledger newspaper.
LeGrand is on the air broadcasting for Rutgers radio and is continuing his studies. He serves as the ambassador for The Kessler Foundation, which is one of the largest public charities supporting people with disabilities.
Join LeGrand as he discusses his journey and his new book, Believe. Admission is free and copies of the book will be available for purchase. A special edition for young readers age 8 and older will also be available.
River Road Books is selling copies of Believe in advance of the event for those wishing to avoid long lines. The store is located at 759 River Road, Fair Haven.
MIDDLETOWN
The Middletown Township Public Library will host from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, Write Away – Envelope Books for tweens in grades 3-6.
Participants will make books from actual envelopes and readers will be able to interact with the story by removing each letter, postcard, flyer, etc. from the book.
The program will be held in the children’s program room at 55 New Monmouth Road.
Preregistration is required and may be made at @mtpl.org.
