LITTLE SILVER
Emilio Mignucci, third-generation co-owner of Di Brunos Bros., the largest and oldest cheese counter in Philadelphia, and author Tenaya Darlington will sign copies of their latest guide book about cheese, Di Bruno Bros. Guide to Wedges, Recipes and Pairings, (Running Press 2013) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Sickles Market. Darlington, the book’s author, is also the Di Bruno’s cheese blogger known as Madame Fromage.
Mignucci will serve some of his famous cheese spreads at Sickles Market, sign copies of his cheese book and talk cheese.
This book gives readers an insider’s view of Philadelphia’s legendary cheese counter and a lively guide to pairing cheese with everything from beer and cocktails to olives and charcuterie. Darlington writes about 170 of the world’s greatest cheeses, drawing on stories and knowledge from the store’s third-generation owners.
According to the Di Brunos’ website, their story is similar to many other Italian immigrants in the 1930s. Danny and Joe Di Bruno, along with their brothers and sisters, came to Philadelphia through Ellis Island in search of the American dream. With their willingness to work endless hours and their entrepreneurial spirit, the brothers put everything on the line – which wasn’t much – and opened up the first Di Bruno Bros. Grocery Store. Danny would often say, “We didn’t have much money, but a smile doesn’t cost you anything!” The Di Bruno commitment to making customers smile is still alive and well today. The brothers now own four locations and an online store.
