ProDoula Brings Postpartum Doula Training to the Monmouth
RUMSON – ProDoula, a doula certification agency for the modern woman, will be facilitating postpartum doula training at Bend n’ Blossom, 113 East River Road, Rumson from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 9.
ProDoula, based in Putnam Valley, N.Y., provides training, accreditation and business development expertise to women seeking to become certified doulas.
A doula, also known as a labor coach, is a nonmedical person who assists a woman before, during or after childbirth, providing physical assistance and emotional support.
While ProDoula offers certification workshops to become a labor or postpartum doula, it goes beyond the fundamentals of training to teach women how to craft their own personal career path and business. No medical background is necessary.
The ProDoula philosophy is based on the desire to elevate doulas to a professional level in the eyes of expectant mothers and partners, medical professionals, and doulas themselves.

Free Help Available to People with Medicare Questions
LONG BRANCH– Seniors who may have questions about their Medicare options for 2014 are encouraged to contact the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP), a free program administered by Family and Children’s Service (FCS), to schedule a free confidential counseling session with a trained, unbiased counselor. Family & Children’s Service is the oldest nonprofit social service agency in Monmouth County serving the vulnerable through education, intervention, care and counseling.
Open enrollment for Medicare and Medicare Part D (Medicare prescription drug coverage) began Tuesday, Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. During this time period, current or newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries can:
– Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan.
– Change from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare.
– Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another Medicare Advantage Plan.
– Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn’t offer drug coverage to a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage.
– Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage to a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn’t offer drug coverage.
– Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
– Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another
– Drop Medicare prescription drug coverage completely.
“Our trained SHIP counselors are here to help seniors cut through the confusion that sometimes keeps them from understanding their Medicare options and find the coverage that best meets their needs,” says Samantha White, FCS manager of volunteer services.
SHIP counseling is free, unbiased, confidential, and available to anyone with questions about Medicare, regardless of income. SHIP counselors do not provide legal advice or sell, recommend or endorse any specific insurance product, agent or insurance provider.
SHIP volunteers are also trained to help seniors determine if they qualify for Medicare’s “Extra Help” program to help with prescription drug costs. Under the program, qualified subscribers might pay no more than $2.60 for each generic drug and $6.50 for each brand name drug. Since income and resource limits change each year, it’s important for seniors to investigate their eligibility. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services estimates that more than 2 million people with Medicare may be eligible for the subsidy, but are not currently enrolled to take advantage of the these savings.
FCS currently has 17 volunteer counselors serving at 16 different locations throughout Monmouth County. To schedule a free, confidential counseling session call FCS at 732-728-1331.
To learn more about this or any of FCS’s 11 programs, or how to become a SHIP volunteer, visit www.fcsmonmouth.org.

‘Three Moves’ in Atlantic Highlands
The Second Story Art Gallery, 78 First Ave., presents “Three Moves” – Abstract Painting and Sculptures by David French. The opening reception for this exhibition will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1.
The title “Three Moves” refers to French’s process of creating work based on a process or set of parameters. Within these boundaries, French seeks to create a layered and rich space with the most efficient means. Abstract art often involves the process of reduction and elimination – removing extraneous elements to arrive at a more distilled state. “Three Moves” is an example of these reductive processes – created through three pieces of steel or paint marks. These works show how powerful an image can become when an artist strips away the unnecessary. Exhibition runs Nov. 1 – 30.

Annual Holiday Bazaar and Luncheon
ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The Women’s Group of the United Methodist Churches of Atlantic Highlands and Navesink is holding its 64th annual Holiday Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.
