Writers and readers of all ages and experience levels are invited Friday, June 27, to attend the first Aspiring Writers Conference at Brookdale Community College.
Four Brookdale faculty members and the founder of the Red Bank Blogging Club will give a series of lectures on memoir writing, blogging, narrative medicine and the personal and professional benefits of creative expression.
“You could be 19 or you could be 89. This is really for anyone who is interested in writing or passionate about reading,” said Linda Martin, director of community outreach and lifelong learning at Brookdale.
The conference will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with both morning and afternoon sessions. Lunch will be provided.
Two lectures will be offered simultaneously in both the morning and the afternoon sessions, allowing attendees to select the talks they are most interested in.
Laura McCullough will give a morning lecture entitled “Mind and Memory in Memoir.” The second morning lecture, titled “Blogs: Basics and Beyond,” will feature John Imperatore. Jim Cody will cohost the talk.
The first afternoon lecture, titled “Writing in the Dark: Secrets of the Soul,” will be given by Brookdale associate English professor Marc David Bonagura. The second afternoon talk, “Medicine and the Humanities: Reading, Writing and Reflection,” will be given by Nancy Bryan.

MIDDLETOWN
Deep Cut Gardens will be holding Daylily Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the gardens on Red Hill Road.
In addition to colorful displays, expert daylily growers will be on hand to discuss this hardy flower and give horticultural advice.
The free event is being presented by the Monmouth County Park System and the Garden State Daylily Growers.

RED BANK
The Men’s Ministry of Pilgrim Baptist Church will be hosting its Annual Men’s Fellowship Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22, at the 172 Shrewsbury Ave. church.
The Men’s Choir’s from the shore region will celebrate the sounds of music with “Joy Night” at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 21.
The Men of Pilgrim will host its annual celebration on Sunday, June 22. The Rev. Arnold Jeter, associate minister, will be the preacher for the 8 a.m. service, which will be followed by a free Men’s Day Breakfast for all men. The breakfast will be prepared by the PBC Women’s Ministry. During the 11 a.m. service, the Men’s Day Choir will minister in song and the guest preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Eric Beckhem, pastor of the Clearview Baptist Church in Newark.
