ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The Shade Tree Commission has planted two trees at the municipal harbor entrance in honor of the borough’s first responders.
Commission Chairman Louise Donoghue officiated at the planting of the Red Rocket crepe myrtles on Arbor Day, Friday, April 25, during a well-attended ceremony that included borough officials, residents, police officers and volunteer first-aiders and firefighters. Among those who spoke were Mayor Frederick J. Rast III and Councilman Jacob Hofmann, police Capt. David Rossbach, longtime first-aider Gloria Brown and retired borough librarian Marilyn Scherfen.
A plaque honoring all first responders was placed at the sites.
The tree planting is part of the Shade Tree Commission’s ongoing program to honor residents who have served the community over the years. Each year the commission also distributes seedlings to local youngsters and stages a tree-promoting poster contest for elementary school students.
Donoghue also addressed groups of youngsters at the public library on the value of trees.
The borough was recently designated a Tree City USA for the 33rd straight year.
