Artist Talk, Workshop with Book Artist Kate Okeson

FAIR HAVEN – Canvas Studio Art is presenting contemporary book artist Kate Okeson on Friday, May 2, at the 126 East River Road studio.
Attendees can meet Okeson, see an exhibition of her one-of-a-kind books and hear her speak about what inspires her to create work in book form. The exhibition will feature various books and projects that Okeson has created.
Unlike traditional paintings or sculpture, the artists’ book invites readers to hold it and turn through its pages. Free and open to the public, the exhibition will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
In addition, Okeson will lead a workshop from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, to guide artists to create their own personal narrative in book form. Each book project will include bindings and interiors. The workshop is for teens and adults of all artistic abilities. The cost is $150 and includes all the materials needed to complete a book.
Since 2002, Okeson has been a fine arts educator at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School. A graduate of the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University with a concentration in artists’ books, photography and installation and the College of Education at Seton Hall University, Okeson has taught at Canvas and other schools throughout New Jersey. She previously has exhibited her artwork at galleries in New Jersey and New York.
