LINCROFT – The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education at Brookdale Community College is pleased to collaborate with the former Holocaust Remembrance Committee of Fort Monmouth to present a commemorative event for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. The program, Choosing to Act—Heroism during the Holocaust will be on Monday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to attend.
Two speakers will present stories of heroism: Zvi Bielski, son of Zus Bielski, a leader of the Bielski partisan group, will share his family’s history. The Bielskis, one of the most significant Jewish resistance efforts during the Holocaust, not only provided armed resistance but provided a safe haven for Jews, particularly women, children, and elderly persons who managed to flee into the forests. Under the protection of the Bielski group, more than 1,200 Jews survived the war. The Bielski partisans were depicted in the film “Defiance.”
Helena Flaum, a local Monmouth County resident and Holocaust survivor will tell how she survived by hiding as a Christian forced laborer in Poland. Her personal story of heroism is marked by the acts of kindness of others and her own resilience and strength.
The program will close with the Ceremony of Remembrance honoring Holocaust survivors and remembering the victims of the Holocaust. The Girls Choir of Mount Saint Mary’s Academy, Watchung, will present the musical program.
The event is free and will be held in the Navesink room of the Warner Student Life Center on the Lincroft main campus, 765 Newman Springs Road. Parking is closest in lot 7.
