Boyd, Mary Alyce Detrick, Age: 96, Shrewsbury

Mary Boyd died peacefully on Sunday, November 19 at Meridian Care Center, Shrewsbury where she had lived for the past two years. No illness, no trauma, just the full weight of 96years, finally lifted. The first 36 of those years were spent in Ohio, where she was born and lived as a young woman; Arkansas, where she eloped to marry Harold W. Boyd, Jr., her late husband; and Pennsylvania, where the family of five – Harold, Mary, Thomas, Catherine and James – lived until the Big Move to New Jersey. Mary’s last 60 years were spent in Monmouth County. Mary, Harold and Cathy launched Legs & Wheels/Airport Wheels and messengered people and packages all over the region.

Mary was known around Red Bank as the Cookie Mom. She and Cathy baked thousands of cookies for Riverview events and for their neighbors. She and her daughter got involved with the Booker Chemo Center, the Red Bank Public Library, 4th of July fireworks picnics at Riverview Towers, all with her usual generous spirit and positive energy. She had her father’s reserve and her mother’s spunk and sass.

Catherine Boyd, Mary’s daughter, died in November 2015. Her two sons, Thomas (New York) and James (Orlando), helped make Mary a great-great-grandmother many times over.

Thomas and James plan to hold a celebration of her life, plans forthcoming. In the meantime, expressions of love and appreciation for Mary Boyd can go to Friends of the Red Bank Public Library or to the Jane H. and John Marshall Booker Cancer Center at Riverview Medical Center.
