Samuel Burritt Boynton Jr., 83, passed away on the wintry evening of Jan. 4. Born on Sept. 6, 1934, he was the son of the late Samuel Burritt Boynton Sr. and Helen (Ross) Boynton. On Sept. 8, 1971 he married the former Judith “Dusty” Stout in Rumson.

Sam attended Peddie School and Middlebury College in Vermont. He then returned to New Jersey to join the family business, Boynton and Boynton Insurance Co.

During his tenure at the company, Sam rose to the position of president and retired as chairman of the board following a long and distinguished career. Sam and Dusty lived in Locust and, since 1993, have made their home in Hyde Park, Vermont.

An avid bicyclist, Sam successfully rode across the United States, an endeavor that he found great joy and personal pride in. In addition, Sam enjoyed windsurfing, mountain biking and embracing all that the outdoors offered from the mountains to the sea.

Sam is loved and missed by his wife of 46 years, Judith “Dusty” Boynton of Hyde Park, Vermont; his children, Susan Boynton of Dorset, Vermont; Burr Boynton and his wife Sally Ann Boynton Brown of Boise, Idaho; his stepchildren, Laura Stout of New Paltz, New York; William Paul Stout and his wife Chis of Rumson; his seven grandchildren, Eric Clifford, Samantha Somero, Clarity Brown, Cassandra Brown, Sarah Stout, Anthony Constantine and Julia Constantine; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Sam was predeceased by a sister, Janet Means, and a brother, Whitman Boynton.

A celebration of Samuel Boynton’s life will be held at a date and time to be announced. For those who wish, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Cancer Patient Support Foundation, P.O.
