RED BANK — Police Chief Stephen G. McCarthy lost his battle win cancer this morning, Mayor Pasquale Menna has announced.
McCarthy, 51, had been battling thyroid cancer, sources had said previously. He was named chief on Jan. 11, 2010. He had joined the department 1986, following his graduation for Rutgers University, with a bachelor’s degree in administration of justice.
Prior to serving as chief, McCarthy had been head of criminal investigations and the detective bureau and was promoted to captain in 2007.
“I have lost a good friend and a valuable partner; the police department has been deprived of the spirited leadership and unstinted dedication of the most consummate law enforcement professional in the State. His fellow borough employees have lost a colleague who was a true friend. The residents of Red Bank have been deprived of an intelligent, gracious, gentle and efficient public servant,” Menna said in a prepared statement.
McCarthy is survived by his wife Mary Ellen, their two children, Matthew and Jenna, and his parents, Menna said.
