Cab Hits Woman on Broad Street

RED BANK — Borough police have issued summonses to a taxi driver they say struck a pedestrian crossing Broad Street on Thursday morning.

Police cited Douglas Renigan, 73, Keansburg, for careless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian, said Police Chief Darren McConnell.

Renigan, who was driving a taxi operated by Yellow Car, Red Bank, was traveling south on Broad when he allegedly struck a pedestrian crossing east to west on Broad Street at the Linden Place intersection.

Police identified the victim as Min Chen, 36, a Brooklyn, New York, resident. Chen had minor lacerations to his leg and was complaining of pain and was transported to Riverview Medical Center for treatment.

According to McConnell, Renigan allegedly acknowledged to police he did see Chen “but wasn’t able to stop in time.” McConnell said Chen was in the designated crosswalk at the intersection, which doesn’t have a traffic signal.

Police are still investigating another recent incident of an individual struck by a vehicle on Broad. In that case, occurring on June 23, a 78-year-old borough woman was killed while crossing the southern end of Broad, at the Pinckney Road intersection.

Police are being assisted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office on that investigation, with authorities awaiting the findings of toxicology and vehicle inspection reports, McConnell said.
