Leo “Butch” Carling, of Red Bank, went to his heavenly home on Monday, September 19. He was born in Jersey City and grew up in Fair Haven and Eatontown. He graduated from Long Branch Senior High and Rutgers University.

He proudly served our country as a civil engineering corps officer in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Subic Bay and Port Hueneme.

While employed at Herbert J. Smith Associates, a municipal and econometrics firm, he authored over 100 municipal master plans and supporting materials. Seeking a change of pace, he designed and built custom homes in the Oak Hill Section of Middletown in the 1970s and 1980s. He joined the Monmouth County Department of Buildings & Grounds and was promoted to superintendent in 1997.

After retiring in 2005, he assisted the Shadow Lake Village community plan and executed several improvement projects. He was the editor for their monthly newsletter, renovated the pool tables and organized league and individual competition.

He was a member of the 200 Club of Monmouth County and the Root Beer and Checker Club. He loved “simply messing about in boats,” photography, shooting pool and playing golf.

Leo was predeceased by his parents, Leo J. Carling Jr. and Eleanor Fannie Sloan. He is survived by his former wife, Carole; four children, Leo, Bonnie, Yvette and Lyle; his brother, James “Spike”; his sisters, Margaret “Peg” and Kathleen “Tink”; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He loved his family. His wit and steady hand on the tiller will be missed.
