CBA Crew Claims Medals at Stotesbury Cup Regatta
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Christian Brothers Academy of Lincroft brought home a championship – for the second year in a row – from the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta, held on the Schuylkill River.
First raced on the Schuylkill in 1927, the regatta is attended by crew teams from all parts of the United States and Canada. With more than 180 rowing teams participating and almost 1,000 boats competing this year, the regatta has evolved into the largest and most prestigious high school rowing regatta in the world.
The varsity men’s lightweight 4 boat repeated its success from last year claiming its second gold medal by beating out 35 other boats for the honor. The rowers, who made up this year’s lightweight team, were Michael Guadagno (captain), Daniel Weihs, Samuel Henning, Kevin Hayes (captain) and coxswain Frederick Magliozzi.
“Winning Stotesbury was something completely unreal,” Hayes said. “I can’t really explain how it felt to fight and watch the competition fall back as we pulled ahead, and to feel the swell of emotions as we came closer and closer to the end. Crossing the finish line and realizing what we had done was amazing, especially because something like this doesn’t depend on one person, but on the boat as a whole. It was teamwork in the purest sense of the word.”
The men’s varsity 4 took second place with rowers Neil Hughes, captain John Smallwood (captain), Scott Londregan, Justin Terek and coxswain Nicholas Cummings working for the silver, having to beat out 51 other boats for the honor.
In addition to the two medals, two other CBA boats made it to finals. The freshman 8, manned by Luke Wickham, Collin Seebeck, Jake McGowan, Andrew Farrell , Matthew Toppi , Christopher Ferrigine , Kirin Bhattacharya , Nicolas Dietrich and coxswain Alex Mayo, placed fourth out of 46 boats. The men’s junior 4 with rowers David Ryan Hutzley, Dylan Adams , John Blakeslee , Thomas Morris and coxswain Cameron Pak placed sixth out of a field of 63.
