John “Jay” Hynson Challenger, 55, passed away in Oceanport Aug. 25. Jay was born in Bloomfield and resided in Monmouth County until his death. He was a graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School class of 1981 and attended Rutgers University. Jay worked at Rumson Country Club and for Traffic Lines, Inc. He was a talented athlete in his youth and had a lifelong love of sports. Whether chilling at the beach, attending sports events and rock concerts or hanging out with friends, Jay enjoyed life to the fullest. He was, as he often exclaimed, “Awesome,” and will be missed by all who knew him.

Jay is survived by his sister Mary Challenger (Paul Field); uncle Dave Challenger (Helen); cousins Dave (Jana), Jim (Jennifer) and Brooks (Elizabeth) Challenger; many nieces and nephews; stepfather Lawrence C. Rogers; stepbrothers Kevin and Larry Jr.; along with numerous friends. A special thank you to John, Tricia and Carolann Murphy.

Jay was predeceased by stepbrother Michael Rogers, his father John H. Challenger and mother Nancy C. Rogers.

A private service will be held at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Friends and family will be received Sept. 15 at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank, from 1 to 3 p.m.
