This Sunday, Sept. 24, Oceanport’s Cub Scout Pack 58 will be participating in NJ’s Run For the Fallen. For the second year, our scouts will be joining together to recognize and support this group of runners as they pay tribute to our fallen heroes.
Run for the Fallen is an organization of runners who run one mile for every New Jersey military member killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn. They run across the state in order to raise awareness for the lives of our military service members lost at war.
As den leader and mother of two Oceanport Scouts, I became familiar with this organization in 2016 through Donna Zabe, trustee/secretary for Run for the Fallen. I thought this was a great opportunity to not only support the families and friends of the fallen, but also provide a source of education and awareness for our scouts and other members of the community. We had a great turnout last year and hope to continue increasing participation. Nothing will bring back the lives lost, but the appreciation of our presence as the runners passed, and their dedication and commitment was undeniable.
This gathering will occur on the field off of Port Au Peck Ave., near the Monmouth Racetrack in Oceanport. All are welcome to join and attend. Please visit their website njrunforthefallen.org for a listing of other hero markers throughout the state.
