Computer Skills for Job Hunters at Eastern Branch Library

SHREWSBURY  – The Monmouth County Library Career Information Center at the Eastern Branch Library will continue its series of classes, entitled Computer Skills for Job Hunters, in September.
The 10 classes, which will run from Sept. 8 to Sept. 19, have been designed to introduce job hunters to computer skills and online job search resources. Each class begins at 2:30 p.m. and runs for one hour. The programs are free but registration is required.
The classes are designed for first-time visitors, those who need a refresher course or those who missed one of the previous sessions.
The Eastern Branch Library is located at 1001 Route 35. Registration for any one class or for all 10 is available by calling 866-941-8188.
The classes being offered are:

  • Introduction to the Career Information Center @ MCL on Monday, Sept. 8.  Participants will learn how to navigate the computer resources of the Career Information Center at the Monmouth County Library.  Tutorials will range from mouse skills and keyboarding to Microsoft Word and how to fill out a job application.
  • Email Essentials on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The class is for people who already have an email account and who need to learn how to attach resumes to email messages to apply for jobs. For those without an email account, call 866-941-8188 to schedule a one-on-one email registration session.
  • Writing a Resume with Microsoft Word 2010 on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Participants will learn how to follow a basic outline and enhance with their own skills to personalize the resume. Topics covered include spellcheck and format, how to save to a personal USB, and attach to an email or submit to a website. Please bring a USB flash drive to save your work and a rough draft of your resume.
  • Introduction to Job Searching with indeed.com on Thursday, Sept. 11. As the leading pay-for-performance recruitment advertising network, Indeed drives millions of targeted applicants to jobs in every field and is the most cost-effective source of candidates for thousands of companies.
  • Exploring Careers with OOH and CareerInfoNet on Friday, Sept. 12. The Occupational Outlook Handbook (www.bls.gov/ooh) describes jobs, necessary training, job outlook and salary.  CareerInfoNet (www.careerinfonet.org) offers this information on the county and state level.
  • mySkills myFuture on Monday Sept. 15. Participants will learn how to find details about careers that may be a good match for their skills, and also locate local schools and training programs that can help in a new career move.
  • Reference USA on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Reference USA: A business directory that can help find potential employers. Participants will learn how to access Reference USA via the library homepage or through JerseyClicks, and how to search by location, industry, and size.
  • Jobs4Jersey on Wednesday, Sept. 17.  Jobs4Jersey: The Job Search Tool of the state Department of Labor. At www.jobs4jersey.com participants can write a resume, apply for specific jobs and adjust a search by degree of match, company location and the age of the job listing.
  • Job and Career Accelerator on Thursday, Sept. 18. Participants will use the Resume Maker to write and store different resumes for different types of jobs.
  • Introduction to LinkedIn on Friday, Sept. 19. LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) lets participants create an online presence to facilitate employers or recruiters contacting them.  Learn how to network at companies job-seekers  have targeted, and join interest groups to grow a professional social network.
