County Consumer Affairs Launches Proactive Initiative

FREEHOLD  – Monmouth County’s Division of Consumer Affairs has launched an initiative to protect shore town businesses and beach-goers this summer.
The division is in the process of going door to door to businesses on the boardwalks in Monmouth County to remind them of the statutes and return policies set forth by the state Consumer Fraud Act.
“Last year, our office received numerous complaints from both consumers and business owners,” said Annmarie Howley, director of the county’s Division of the Consumer Affairs. “That is why this year we are going directly to each of the businesses to ensure that they understand the statutes that will protect both them and the consumers.”
Businesses have been notified that, as per the Consumer Fraud Act, all merchandise must have a tag or label with the selling price. With regards to a return policy, a business may have any return policy they wish as long as it is clearly visible to the consumer before the sale is made.
“It is important that businesses clearly identify their sale prices and return policies to protect themselves and their customers,” Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry said.
