English-Speaking Union Hosts Talk

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The Monmouth County Branch of The English-Speaking Union will hold An Evening with Adrian Tinniswood, OBE (Order of the British Empire), at 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Beacon Hill Country Club, 8 Beacon Hill Road.
Tinniswood, a distinguished historian and author is this year’s English Speaking Union Evelyn Wrench Speaker. He writes and speaks on architecture and history and has written a history of the National Trust’s Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire as well as 11 books including books on Sir Christopher Wren, the great fire of London, the Barbary pirates and “The Verneys: A True Story of Love, War and Madness in 17th Century England,” which was shortlisted for the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction.  He will discuss his latest book, “The Rainborowes: One Family’s Quest to Build a New England.” The book follows the history of the Rainborowes, a family that had many members leave England to become early settlers in the American Colonies. During the English Civil War, many family members returned to England to fight and brought their new American culture, ideology and dedication to liberty and equality back to their home country.
Tinniswood will have copies of the book available for sale to interested participants.
Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres a will be at 6 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7:15 p.m.  Admission is $40 for members; $45 for nonmembers. Beer, wine and soft drinks are included in admission price. A cash bar also will be available.
