TRENTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $51 million in public assistance grants to help the state’s efforts to remove debris from Super Storm Sandy from the state’s waterways.

The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) received federal aid to help in removing the debris from the state’s coastal and tidal waterways – from Bergen to Cape May counties – with the DEP hiring private contractors.

The total amount of debris removal grants is $68.11 million, according to the governor’s office.
FEMA also has awarded $2.3 million to Avon-By-The-Sea to pay contractors to rebuild Sandy-damaged structures, including the community’s boardwalk and seawall.
