A fire at IFF’s compounding facility in Hazlet brought a large response from Hazlet’s three fire companies, as well as other Bayshore firefighting companies Saturday afternoon.
The fire, reported by security guards at 4:01 p.m., was under control about an hour later.
There were no injuries to workers or firefighters, said Hazlet Police Chief Jim Broderick.
The cause of the fire was unknown Saturday night. Chief Broderick said that is seemed to be confined to some equipment on the roof, and the roof itself. The county Fire Marshals Office was on the scene and investigating the cause, he said.
“Fortunately the fire did not spread to the interior of the building. Then it would have been a truly major fire,” said Broderick. IFF is a manufacturer of flavors and fragrances.

The fire seemed to be confined to the roof, according to Hazlet Police Chief Jim Broderick.

IFF posted a statement to their Facebook page Saturday night. It said, “There was a fire earlier today at our Hazlet, NJ, facility. The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured. We are very grateful for the first responders on the scene who helped us with the situation.”
A portion of Route 36 was temporarily closed to traffic during the firefighting operation, and traffic was diverted onto nearby avenues.
Broderick said that he could not recall a fire at the facility in the past 20 years.
The firefighting operation was under the command of North Centerville Fire Chief Frank Wood.
