ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS — The Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church will stage the church’s annual Fall Festival after Sunday’s 10 a.m. worship service.
Apple and pumpkin baked goods will be sold and there will be small pumpkins for children to decorate and also some small fancy pumpkins for sale.
Preceding the fund-raising event, the Rev. Michael Riley’s sermon will deal with Peter’s sinking like an anchor when he started to walk on water and Jesus as the rock and anchor of our lives, come whatever storms we encounter in a sermon entitled “Anchors Away.”
During the service, pastor will continue his “mystery bag” children’s sermon series during which youngsters try to “stump the pastor” by placing personal “treasures” in brown paper bags. Riley then creates a message from the contents of the bag.
Sunday School, which is open to all area youngsters, begins following the children’s sermon.
The adult choir, which is seeking new members, will also sing during the service. It rehearses at 7:30 p.m on Thursdays at the church.
The liturgist for the service will be Elder Peter Donoghue.
The pastor’s weekly Genesis Bible Study will continue at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. It is open to the public.
Riley, pastor since April, is an ordained minister and a columnist, staff writer and editorial writer at the Asbury Park Press. His column, “Only Human,” appears in The Press on Fridays.
The 121-year-old, handicapped accessible church at Third and E. Highland Aves., offers extra parking in a new municipal lot next to the Christian Education Building on Highland avenue.
Child care for four-year-olds and younger is provided during the regular worship service.
