To The Readers
Happy New Year!
I hope you celebrated with family and dear friends and welcomed in 2015 surrounded with warmth of spirit.
We’ve got a New Year’s resolution here at The Two River Times: We’re going to be the best source of local news and news of local interest to you on our newspaper pages and on our soon-to-be-improved website at tworivertimes.com.
This year we will have more news on tworivertimes.com starting Jan. 5.
That’s a promise.
It’s also a promise that this newspaper will provide you with even more news – the things you need to know as a citizen and the things that entertain and delight you. You’ll read inspiring stories about your neighbors and be touched or motivated by their personal stories. And you’ll read stories about events that happen nationally and internationally that touch your communities.
Because ultimately that’s what The Two River Times is about – people.
We care about what you’re doing and we want to report about it. We want you to have information you need during storms – meteorological, sociologic or economic. And we want to be the newspaper you clip out and put on your refrigerator.
As we reflect on the year, unfortunately the end of 2014 was scarred by the news of the horrifying loss of two of New York City’s finest following the tragic incidents in Ferguson and Staten Island. The call for calm was eventually heeded and a dialogue begun.
Residents and officers of New Jersey were indirectly impacted by those events and discussions have begun among the NAACP, the county and state law enforcement communities.
No, the news didn’t happen here. But, as most national stories often do, it has a ripple effect here.
That’s why we report news of local interest, not just local news.
Red Bank commuters had something to say about protests in New York City last month and minority communities were concerned about events.
The threats against Sony were brought right home when a movie was cancelled for fear of terrorism in their theaters. The public certainly thought twice before going to the movies – something they never would have done before.
Even international news has meaning locally. The Cuban community has different opinions about the United States lifting the embargo against Cuba but either way, they feel strongly about it. Opinions are different if Cubans migrated here in 1961 when the Fidel Castro led revolution swept out Batista. It’s an emotional issue that the Cuban government may gain from the decision and the president didn’t ask for more concessions from the oppressive regime. And, a lot of people are eagerly waiting to see when they can book a vacation in Havana.
The stock market set records throughout the year breaking the 10,000 mark and then catapulting over 18,000. That story certainly had positive implications to many in the Two River area.
We’re here to report local news and localize state, national and at times, international news.
I welcome invitations to come discuss stories, explain where the newspaper is going and listen to your thoughts and ideas.
We’re a community. Let’s have coffee.
