MIDDLETOWN – Ice hockey is coming to Mater Dei Prep High School for the high school’s girls.
The Seraphs will become the first high school female-only ice hockey team in the Monmouth County/Ocean County area and will begin play in the upcoming 2014-2015 season.
“The addition of women’s hockey is indicative of our commitment to the school’s mission to provide opportunities for students,” Mater Dei Prep Principal Steven Sciarappa said. “It is an example of the exciting growth that is happening on our campus.”
According to Mater Dei Prep Athletic Director Dennis Tobin, the Seraphs will play a full varsity schedule against other girls ice hockey teams in New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania and the majority of the teams that they will compete against play in the Women’s Interscholastic Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic, which consists of teams from Hill School, Holton Arms, Morristown-Beard, Pingry School, Portledge School, Princeton High School, Princeton Day School, Rye Country and Shady Side Academy.
“Playing against other women’s ice hockey teams levels the playing field and it gives the girls a chance to play in college,” Tobin said.
The Seraphs will practice and play its home games at Middletown Ice World, a new state-of-the-art facility located a quarter mile away from the Mater Dei Prep campus.
“Our objective was to make certain we have access to a facility in our area that can accommodate our student’s day-to-day schedules,” Tobin said. “Across our athletic department, we work to have schedules and resources that complement the family, community and academic commitments of our students.”
According to Tobin, Mater Dei Prep held an open house on April 10 and a number of girls were asking about the ice hockey team.
An girls ice hockey information and welcome night will be held at the school, 538 Church St., at 7 p.m. Monday, May 12.
