Happy Birthday To The Two River Times

To Our Readers
Birthdays can be bittersweet and this one is. Art Kamin, the long-term editor of The Daily Register, as you will read on page one today, passed on Tuesday, ironically the same week as our 25th celebration. The Register, as you will read many times in our commemorative section, was the precursor of The Two River Times and was embraced by The Two River Area. It closed a year before the TRT opened and our paper was embraced because it filled a hole left by the loss of the Daily Register. Art was the heart and soul of that paper and the epitome of the watchdog journalist, as well as someone who tirelessly gave back to his community. I was his colleague and competitor for many years, as well as a college journalism teacher at the same schools, and I respected him immensely as did all the local residents who had a role in The Register or was one of its readers. Hats off to you, Art. You were the one to emulate.
Another story on page one, which is a much happier one, is the appearance of Bruce Springsteen at the Count Basie  on the eve of his 66th birthday! What could be more Two River Area than Bruce appearing in Red Bank to sing a song with Jackson Browne? The Boss always gives back and delivers to this area and it’s no wonder his music is globally known and loved.
There’s also a story about our Crossroad’s Initiative for Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Forum on page one, which shows the community’s continuing commitment to make the Two River Times a better place. And there’s our local version of the impact of Pope Francis’ first visit to this country on page one as well. The interfaith rally about social justice and improving the environment were focused on two of the pope’s most recent calls for unity and action. Inside the news section, you’ll also read about how this community gives back to each other. Drexel swept all four trophies in the Rumson rowing event that raised funds for the Rumson Fair Haven juvenile rowing program. And the Bishop blessed both Holy Cross Church in Rumson and Mater Dei Prep and praised Mater Dei students, parents and alumni for saving the beloved high school. Jump to The People Pages and you’ll find photos of people supporting Meridian Health, Sandy Hook Foundation and American Littoral Society.
The tradition of this community, and this paper, is to work together to improve what is already a wonderful place. But, as all places, it can improve and must be protected. That’s what we are celebrating in this issue, not only in our regular pages but also in our two part, 14-page commemorative section. We have tried to represent a sampling of the fascinating stories the Two River Times has covered over the years and just how well the paper presented the news with stories and powerful images. The TRT has strived to provide you with positive news and the meaning of the tragedies, as well as constantly reporting what is the most important news in the community. We hope you enjoy it. Please join us in our celebration!
