High Holy Days Services Slated at Rumson Congregation

RUMSON – Those looking for a place to worship and study for the upcoming high holy days are invited to Congregation B’nai Israel.
Rabbi Jeff Sultar, Cantor Dov Goldberg and Choir Director Rob Fire invite people to join them for services beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4, and continuing through Saturday, Sept. 14.
To prepare for the holidays, Sultar will lead a Selichot study session at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. His topic will be “The Seven Questions We’ll Be Asked at the End of Our Life” in which he will take a look at a teaching in the Talmud which imagines what the seven questions are that we’ll be asked at the end of our lives. Refreshments will be served at 9 p.m.; at 9:30 p.m. the Selichot service of forgiveness and repentance will begin.
The congregation will meet for services at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Congregation B’nai Israel Cemetery located on Riverdale Avenue in Tinton Falls.
Erev Rosh Hashanah services will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 with the first day of Rosh Hashanah services held Thursday, Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. Children’s services and junior congregation will begin at 10:30 a.m. All children must be registered in advance. At 5:30 p.m. in Marine Park, Red Bank, Sultar and Goldberg will lead the community in the Tashlich service wherein one’s sins are symbolically cast into the water. Mincha and Ma’ariv services will follow at the synagogue at 7 p.m.
Services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Friday, Sept. 6, will begin at 9 a.m., with children’s services and junior congregation starting at 10:30 a.m.
The shofar will be sounded on both days of Rosh Hashanah.
Kol Nidre services on the eve of Yom Kippur – Friday, Sept. 13 – will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. Children’s services and junior congregation will begin at 11 a.m. The synagogue will offer a community Yizkor service at 5 p.m., followed immediately by Mincha/Neilah services. The shofar will be sounded at 7:38 p.m. and will be followed by a congregational break-fast.
The community is invited to share in these services and the break-fast.
Founded in 1922 and celebrating its 91st anniversary this year, Congregation B’nai Israel is an egalitarian, conservative synagogue located at 171 Ridge Road.
