Holy Cross School ‘In the Pink’ for Charity

RUMSON – There was method in the pink madness that swept Holy Cross School in Rumson.
Flashes of pink could be seen on the uniforms of Holy Cross students, on hall decorations and the icing on cupcakes during last week’s Pink Week, a project created and promoted by the student council.
“We did this because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Emma Scales of Red Bank, a member of the Student Council Executive Board, composed of five eighth-grade students.
“We wanted as many students as possible to get involved,” said board member Grace Kenney of Rumson, who distributed Pink Week flyers to each class.
According to Kenney, the student council focuses most of it activities on charity. “We either have an event then decide where the money will go or we select a charity and create a project for it,” she said.
Holy Cross celebrated the Living Rosary on Monday, Oct. 20.  Although independent of Pink Week, Scales said the Catholic tradition related well to the project. “It gave students an opportunity to give one of the greatest gifts they can give to people whose lives are affected by breast cancer and that’s prayer.”

Throughout the week students wore pink accessories in addition to their regular uniform.
“The boys got into it,” said Kenney, who sported pink socks, sneakers and headband.
In addition to pink socks and ties, she noted that some boys even wore pink suspenders.
A sale of baked goods with a definite nod to pink and a dress “mostly” in pink day rounded out Pink Week’s events.
The proceeds of nearly $1,000 will be distributed to Mary’s Place by the Sea in Ocean Grove and Betty’s Gift. Mary’s Place is a comfortable place for women to rest during cancer treatment. Betty’s Gift, established in memory of Holy Cross parishioner, Betty Kenney who died from cancer, funds scholarships for students in need to attend Holy Cross School.
Looking forward to the next event, a Halloween parade, costume contest and candy-stuffed pumpkin raffle, that also will be contributed to Mary’s Place, Executive Board Member PJ DiPaolo of Fair Haven, said, “I’m glad we’re doing stuff right way and I’m hopeful we’ll be able to do many more things for charity.”
