RUMSON – Every student in Mike Feerst’s third grade gym classholds a basketball, eager to start dribbling, shooting and raising money for The American Heart Association. “It’s a healthy thing,” said Feerst who teaches physical education at Holy Cross School. “We work out in class, making our own hearts stronger, and we raise money for a charity that helps people who don’t have healthy hearts.” The fundraiser, for which students enlisted sponsors was incorporated into the gym classes in all grades. “All of the kids take part in the contests, games and skill activities we run. They can choose to participate in the donation program,” Feerst explained. “It felt like it was a good and kind thing to do,” said 9 year old William Keegan who enlisted three sponsors who contributed to the school’s total collection of $3,200. Holy Cross student volunteers have raised money for the American Heart Association for at least 15 years. “It’s about fitness and helping others,” explained Feerst. “It’s what we do.”
