RUMSON – The Junior League of Monmouth County (JLMC) is celebrating 75 years of building better communities with two events.
The first event is a luncheon at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank on Friday, April 4, honoring all Monmouth County volunteers. The second is a cocktail gaming night at the Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands on Saturday, May 31, during which the league will recognize its 2014 Outstanding Leaguer.
Since its founding in Red Bank by 13 forward-thinking women, the members of the JLMC have responded to the needs of the community by training women to become effective volunteer leaders and by implementing projects and programs to improve the lives of families in our county.
The JLMC and its hundreds of volunteers have touched most, if not all, of the nonprofit organizations in Monmouth County in some way, including holding current and past leadership and board seats. The Monmouth Museum, Monmouth Day Care Center and Hand in Hand in Long Branch are all projects of the JLMC that have had lasting impact on county residents.
As part of its training mission, JLMC members develop and implement programs that become viable community resources and eventually turn them over to others in the community to carry forward. It is the comprehensive training that the JLMC provides its members which sets the organization apart from others and is the reason many league members can be found on almost every charitable board in the county.
During the JLMC’s 75-year history, the roles of women have changed and many members now work outside the home, but they continue to take time to meet at the JLMC headquarters at 55 Center St. to tackle the latest challenges and improve the community.
The JLMC’s current focus is Empowering Young Girls to Become Confident Women. Through various programs, the league is reaching out to young girls to give them tools to build self-esteem and navigate the ever-changing relationships between friends and family. Over the past year, the JLMC has sponsored 10 girls to attend summer leadership camps, given more than 100 girls a healthy start through the league’s Kids in the Kitchen program, and coached 30 young ladies through Girls on the Run (GOTR).
The JLMC will be celebrating this diamond anniversary year with a luncheon on April 4 at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank to celebrate its founding members and every woman dedicated to making positive change in her community through volunteer efforts. To honor its 13 charter members, the JLMC is asking luncheon guests to don their hats, gloves and pearls on April 4!
The anniversary celebration will continue with a Diamond Jubilee gala on May 31 at Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands. The evening will feature the music of Tim McLoone and the Shirleys, casino gaming, an open bar and dinner as well as recognizing the 2014 Outstanding Leaguer.
