LITTLE SILVER – Planned improvements to the borough hall will make its main entrance more accessible to handicapped visitors – just as soon as the council receives a suitable bid.
Proposed work would include the construction of automatic doors with the installation of electrical wiring at the front entrance of the building. Automatic doors would make the main entrance accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Mayor Robert Neff said the council had gotten quotes for the work but was still looking for a contractor to implement it.
“We went out to bid and, lo and behold, we got no bids,” Neff said, adding that they would go out to bid again. “We hope to keep the process moving along.”
The mayor noted that the municipal building, which also houses the police station, is already ADA accessible from other entrances on the side and in the rear. The council decided to move forward on installing automatic doors to the front entrance using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, he said.
Little Silver has been awarded a $36,000 federal grant through HUD’s CDBG program that awards annual grants to provide communities with resources to address a range of development needs, including ADA improvements. Neff said the borough has been looking to make updates with the funds.
“We saw it was available,” he said, noting they had installed a ramp at the rear entrance last year. “This will take care of the front entrance. It should be very accommodating.”
Neff said the bidding process would continue and hoped the entire municipal building would soon be wheelchair accessible.
“We’re looking forward to getting it done,” he said.
