Joan Kathryn Madigan, 89, entered into eternal life on June 14 at home in Dublin, Ohio. Born in Orange to Eric F. Herud and Anna (Courtney), Joan grew up with three brothers, graduated from Our Lady of the Valley H.S. in Orange, attended business college, worked for a dental office in north Jersey and in September of 1953 married John H. Madigan.

Joan lived in Tinton Falls for more than 50 years before moving to Dublin, Ohio. She was a communicant of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, and she and her husband John (Jack) were among the founding parishioners supporting the church and school throughout their life together.

While still raising her six children Joan joined the staff of the Senior Nutrition Center for Monmouth County. For 25 years she befriended senior citizens while working as the site manager in Red Bank and then Keyport, coordinating their mid-day meal and social activities. She retired from the program in 2000. After retirement she enjoyed golfing, playing cards, walking and volunteering.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, her husband John in 2003; a daughter, Nancy in 1997; brothers and sister-in- laws, Courtney (Marie) and John (Nancy). She is survived by her loving children, Richard E. Madigan of New York City, Elizabeth Calvey (Robert) of Alexandria, Virginia, John H. Madigan Jr. of Washington, D.C. and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Carolyn Vinyard (Donald) of Dublin, Ohio, and Jill K. Madigan of Lynn, Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Robert Calvey, Elizabeth Moss Madigan and Eric Vinyard; her brother, Frank Herud of Williamsville, New York; sisters-in-law, Monica Phalon (Madigan), Helen Dressel (Madigan), Carolyn Madigan; nephews and nieces; and her dear friends in Tinton Falls.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 23 from 4 to 8 p.m., at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 24 at 10 a.m. at St Leo the Great, 50 Hurleys Lane, Lincroft. Burial will follow at BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 14 Chesterfield Arneytown Road, Wrightstown.
