Middletown South Focused on Strong Season

MIDDLETOWN  – The Middletown South baseball team finished last season with a 14-10 record and won the A North Division Public School title.
“We compete in the A North Division, which is one of the toughest divisions in the Shore Conference,” head coach Ryan Spillane said. “Our team is young, but we are very talented.”
The top returning players for the Eagles this season are: senior pitcher/shortstop Kyle Brey, who has already signed with Wagner College to play baseball; senior pitcher/right fielder Andrew Wisialko; senior catcher/infielder Christian Penk; senior pitcher Matt Platenyk; senior third baseman Tom Mariniello; and junior center fielder Joe Timmins.
The best of the newcomers for the Eagles are: junior center fielder Nolan Pereless; junior first baseman Brendan Maguire; junior infielder/pitcher Zach DeRocco; junior outfielders Jake Chatfield and Anthony Maiello; and junior pitcher Colin Bergin. Also on that list are: sophomore catcher Zach Schild; sophomore catcher/infielder Freddy Yahn; sophomore infielder/pitcher Austin Markmann; sophomore pitcher/second baseman Johnny Zega; sophomore infielder Tommy Gannon; and sophomore outfielder Matt Mosquera.
“Our goal this season is to win 20 games and we have to pitch and play good defense,” Spillane said. “The guys are focused and have a great work ethic.”
The Eagles will open up their season on Wednesday, April 2, at Manalapan.
