WEST LONG BRANCH – Monmouth University’s Center for the Arts has announced the opening of a new gallery exhibit, called “Glory Bound. Photographs by Barry Schneier” will be held Sept. 2-30 in the Pollak Gallery.
The exhibit features photographs of several iconic musicians in pivotal moments of their careers, including photos from Bruce Springsteen’s legendary 1974 Harvard Square Theatre show.
The opening reception for the exhibition will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.
Schneier first began his photo work as an undergraduate at Emerson College in Boston. Throughout the 1970s, he was fortunate to have captured many established and up-and-coming artists as a photographer for local music promoters, Windowpane Productions and Dick Waterman.
During this time he had unprecedented access to many young artists as their careers took flight. Most noted is Schneier’s work capturing a young Bruce Springsteen on an historic evening in May 1974 in Boston when Real Paper journalist, Jon Landau, penned the infamous line, “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.”
Thirteen photographs from the show, including several that have never been shown before, are included in the exhibit.
Also featured are photos from Patti Smith’s debut tour performance at San Francisco’s Boarding House in November 1975, Van Morrison’s triumphant return to Boston in April 1974 as he paid tribute to the town where he conceived “Astral Weeks” and Jackson Browne’s first headlining show in a major city at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston in March 1974.
Other photographs in the exhibit feature mid-to-late 1970s performances by artists Paul Butterfield’s Better Days, Boz Scaggs, Little Feat, The Motels, Jesse Colin Young, Joan Armatrading and The Tubes.
Schneier’s photographs can be found in collections ranging from Paramount Pictures, Los Angeles, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland to The Grammy Museum and The New England Folk Music Archives. His work has been shown in galleries throughout the United States and overseas and can be seen online at www.barryschneierphotography.com.

The Pollak Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and during special events.
